Union Representatives One
Who’s this course for?
This online course is designed to be equivalent to the TUC’s Union Reps Stage 1 classroom course. It’s the first stage course for union reps and is aimed at newly elected/appointed reps. However, if you are an experienced rep looking for a refresher, or you want to learn about the roles and responsibilities of a workplace representative, this course is for you.
How will it help me?
The course will help you:
- understand rights at work
- represent members in discussions with employers
- understand how grievances and disciplinaries are handled
- identify the role of the union rep in the workplace and the wider union
- develop the skills you need to be an effective rep
- build confidence in your role and responsibilities as a union rep.
Will completing the course mean I’m a qualified rep?
No, but it may form part of the training your union requires of new reps — you’ll need to contact your own union office to find out more. It’s up to your union to acknowledge your participation in this course, and to let you know what other training is required. If you’re aiming to become a rep It’s a good idea to let them know before you get started on this course.
How do I complete it?
All you need is an internet-enabled mobile device (a phone or tablet) or a computer. The course is arranged into short activities you can complete in 5-15 minutes. Do as little or as much as you like each time you log on — your progress will always be saved. Next time you log on just pick up where you left off.
How long will it take?
That will vary from person to person. The classroom Union Reps Stage 1 course has 60 contact hours, but most people will complete this online version in far fewer hours. Don’t rush it though - it’s important to go at the pace that suits you. Select the button below to get started.
